Cassina Pro Cab 412 chair, designed by Mario Bellini, is a remarkable piece that emerged during the golden age of Italian design and has become an iconic item in the I Contemporanei collection. This chair stands out as the world's first freestanding saddle-hide chair, drawing inspiration from the intricate relationship between a skeleton and its skin. The upholstery of the Cab chair consists of 21 individually die-cut parts made from saddle leather, which then undergo 22 meticulous handcrafted processes. These processes include a lengthy shaving procedure to thin the parts before they are joined together. Once the parts are ready, they are carefully stitched to create the final upholstery.
The leather is hand-molded to fit the steel skeleton of the chair and secured with zippers, resembling the construction of a custom-tailored garment.
