Beech, Leather

Vanity Fair is a replica of the celebrated 904 model that was part of Poltrona Frau's catalogue in 1903 and became an archetype after which modern armchairs have been patterned ever since. It is known the world over for its typical rounded shape and the rows of leather-covered nails that add the finishing touch to the seatback and arms. The padding uses both hand-fashioned vegetal horsehair and rubberised horsehair, the seat cushion is filled with goose down. The springing of the seat, back and arms is by means of biconic steel springs, tied manually and rested on jute belts.

Officially named the ‘model 904’, but known, since 1984, as ‘Vanity Fair’, over time this chair has become the very emblem of Poltrona Frau. The project, which was first produced in 1930, four years after the premature death of Renzo Frau, would appear to have been re-elaborated, as a great many others would be later, from the designs left by Renzo to his wife Sabina. The strong volumetric configuration of Vanity Fair has raised it to the status of a universally recognised icon of Italian design. Seasoned beech support structure. Seat, backrest and armrests sprung by means of hand-tied double cone steel springs resting on jute belts. Handshaped rubberised and vegetable horsehair padding. The seat cushion is in goose down. A row of leather-upholstered nails further embellishes the back. Legs are dark walnut stained beech. Numbered series. 24 kt galvanic dipped golden plate.

ABOUT RENZO FRAU:

Lorenzo Frau, known as ‘Renzo’, was born in Cagliari in 1881. He left Sardinia for military service in Milan, which he completed successfully earning the title of lieutenant. He married Savina Pisati and moved to Turin, at the time a real hub of Italian culture. He initially worked as a sales representative for Gribaudi and then for Dermoide Patent, manufacturer of faux leather. Having moved to Great Britain for work, he was able to discover the Chesterfield model armchairs and immediately imagined its potential, successfully starting to import it into Italy. At the same time, however, he was also attracted by the models of French and Central European style. He therefore decided to create his own artisan production laboratory. It was 1912: Poltrona Frau was created. From the initial work ‘in style’, Frau quickly moved onto direct design. Poltrona Frau became not only a production pole, but also a meeting point for artists and intellectuals. Renzo Frau used these relations to consolidate the brand image: successful models ensued quickly, one after the other. As the First World War broke out, Frau was called to fight for his country and his wife Savina bravely took up the reins of the company. Frau’s armchairs thus began entering the most important buildings, also used by the royal family. Renzo Frau met an early death in 1926. He left an extensive archive of projects that would allow his wife to coherently pursue Poltrona Frau production in the years to come.

POLTRONA FRAU LEATHERS:

Pelle Frau® SC - Color System Frau®. Pelle Frau® leather means colour, too. The planned colours of the Colour System: a co-ordinated range of 90 different nuances of colours, characterised by the ease with which the various colours can be matched up. In turn, for those who prefer the artificial vocabulary of colour, this allows for the creation of harmonious combinations of the shades both among different pieces of furniture and within the same object. Poltrona Frau has achieved the perfect balance of natural material and surface dressing treatments thanks to its specific technical research and vast experience. Passing time will confer elegance on Color System by Pelle Frau®, with its interesting sensory profile, resistance characteristics and for its excellent performance during use, as well as offering easy maintenance.

Pelle Frau® Heritage. The warm shades provided by nature form the basis for the Pelle Frau® Heritage leather collection. Treated naturally, with great care: the result is this beautiful, soft, ‘full-bodied’ product. This is a delicate leather that will please nature-lovers, and those who appreciate the beauty of the imperfections of the natural grain, and the dignity with which it ages. Only a few, carefully selected whole bovine leathers become Heritage leather. The choice to swathe oneself in the pleasure of this material is also a choice to accept variations in colour over time, and to consider, in particular conditions of use, possible fading. The Heritage leather characteristics make it unsuitable for exposure to direct sunlight or heat sources, and accidental stains will be difficult to remove.

Pelle Frau® Soul. Pelle Frau® Soul, the excitement of contact. The very essence of the material. Warmth, softness, the aroma of natural leather, in a timeless, sensorial experience. Warm, deep colours in all natural tones. Pelle Frau® Soul is an aniline-dyed full grain leather with no surface finishing. It stands out for its transparency and full colours that reveal, thanks to its natural photo-sensitive characteristics, a depth of tone and warmth, the softness and naturalness of a live material. These points of prestige, blended with the natural imperfections of the leather, guarantee uniqueness and quality. Only a select group of valuable raw bovine hides of European origin with a limited number of flaws (scars, few pores, wrinkles, insect bites, etc.) can become Pelle Frau® Soul leather. Only 10 out of 100 hides allow their natural features to shine through and become Pelle Frau® Soul leather. The more transparent the leather, the more it will improve over time, ageing in a dignified manner. Because no leather is equal to another, and every product upholstered with Pelle Frau® Soul leather will be unique. The Pelle Frau® Soul leather characteristics make it unsuitable for exposure to direct sunlight or heat sources, and accidental stains will be difficult to remove. We advise using a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.

Pelle Frau® Nest stands out for the transparency and fullness of its colours, the warmth, natural and soft feel of the live material. Hardwearing structure with a clear character. Masterful artisan manufacture, which even before tanning starts with apainstaking selection of the very best leather to ensure its characteristic elegant shine, defined as ‘millepunte’ (a thousand dots) in tanners’ jergo. Clear, deep grain with a two-colour effect. Pelle Frau® Nest is a full grain, semi-aniline, lightly coated leather. The drum dye gives the material a transparency and fullness of colour. The colour leaves all the pretty little irregularities untouched, allowing the natural surface movements to shine through.

Leather Frau® Century. Every fold, every nuance, every sign is an open book for those who can read and interpret it. Only this leather, subjected to long hours of craftsmanship and a special tint, can gather one hundred years of history and wrap up now a Vanity Fair or a 1919 with the unique charm of the objects experienced over time. Just like the pages of a beloved book, leafed through for a long time. Read and reread. Marked by small marginal notes in the points that most affected the mind, arousing other thoughts, evoking other memories and images. Pelle Frau® Century is offered in the two shades of Tobacco and Lead, both warm and elegant, and is available for covering a limited selection of iconic furnishings: Chester One, Lyra, 1919, Vanity Fair, Archibald and Juliet.
