Origins Of The Future. The New Cassina Preview At 'Salone Del Mobile' Milan 2016
Celebrate the future and its constant evolution, without ever forget the past, that's the principal aim of "Origins of the Future", the new Cassina collection, recently presented at Salone del Mobile (12/17 April 2016 , Milano Rho Fair).
The new 2016 collection was inspired by the idea that existence is the result of a dynamic and evolving process. So the need to rediscover and reinterpret the icons of design, adapting them to a changing world. That’s why tradition and innovation go hand in hand, following a cyclical process.
Cassina’s Manifesto, a step away from the 90th anniversary (which will fall in 2017), has been inspired by questions and reflections on contemporary society and its reverberations in the world of forms and colors. A continuous "becoming", a "future that is renewed," to explore to bring out aspects unknown and to trace new paths.
So within an exhibition area of 150,000 square meters, surrounded by the extraordinary works created by the greatest designers from around the world, stands imposing a stand with reinforced concrete walls, designed by Patricia Urquiola, Art Director of the brand and inspired by the Rietveld Pavilion, a temporary structure, built in 1955 in Arnhe ( the Netherlands), to exhibit art works.
The stand includes models made by the most important Cassina’s contemporary artists and designers. Chairs, sofas, armchairs, indoor and outdoor furniture to transform the spaces into real places to live, revisiting a contemporary icons that have marked Cassina’s story.
MutAtions is definitely the first chapter of the extensive C90 program, designed to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the company, a reflection on its history and opportunity to look with new eyes its most famous models. These include the chair Black Red and Blue (Zeilmaker) by Gerrit T. Rietveld proposed today by Cassina in a more comfortable version, with soft cushions and back in fabric or leather. The structure is in black-stained beechwood with white contrasting parts. Seat and back in green lacquered multiplywood.
Another example of experimentation is Utrecht C90 Limited Edition, designed in 1935, and now available in a customized version, thanks to the introduction of topstitch zigzag, five new colors of thread and a wide range of new fabrics. The artist Bertjan Pot has designed a fabric in three Jacquard variants. The architecture of the armchair is reflected in the innovative manufacture of this BoxBlocks fabric, made from eight coloured threads, combined two at a time to create 19 colours designed to a template to follow the shape of the armchair. The fabric has a unique, perfectly balanced geometric pattern, in which the triangle combinations are never repeated. Each BoxBlocks fabric covers 90 limited editions in bespoke upholstery, for a total of 270 models, all numbered to guarantee Cassina authenticity.
The Doge table by Carlo Scarpa has a wide range of new finishes, in addition to the original version in steel: aluminum polished, shiny gunmetal, bright copper and dull red. The tops are in float glass for all the sizes or in two marble versions: Carrara white or Marquiña.
Wink is a funny chaise-longue with adjustable position, designed by Toshiyuki Kita with an innovative design and a playful and informal style (consider the Mickey Mouse ears’ headrests). The supporting structure is made of steel, with polyurethane foam CFC-free polyurethane and polyester wadding. The coating is available in a wide and updated range of fabrics in different colors or leather. Upon request, overcovers are available.
Met, designed by Piero Lissoni keeps an essential and elegant style. The collection has been expanded with the introduction of a chair and a chaise-longue, used as a modular element right or left. Covers are available in fabric or leather, while the internal structure is in steel and padded with polyurethane foam, CFC-free, with different densities and polyester wadding. The feet come for the whole collection, in polished aluminum or matt anthracite.
Beam Sofa System of Patricia Urquiola is a system of soft seats supported by a beam, which raises the soft and light pillow backrest and armrests, bringing them together in a clever embrace. The base is the functional core of the system. Indeed, it enables various configurations to be created, arranging the padded elements together or alternating the seating, tables and ottoman in interesting compositions.
With Deadline Ronan Gilad mirror becomes a real art work. Two mirrors together, rectangular or square, inserted in a frame with a 12 mm distance: front mirror is decorated with silver and painted in orange, blue or red. The front mirror is decorated with silvering and backpainted in orange, blue or red. The back mirror reflects its decorations and its colours to produce graphic effects at various levels of reflection, also dependant on the angle of observation.
Gender is a cozy and comfortable armchair designed by Patricia Urquiola. An armchair, identity-changing thanks to the wide choice of color schemes and measures, combining traditional features, modern and innovative elements. The soft padded inner part dialogues with the rigid outer part, embellished by coloured leather. The fabrics cling to the curves of the armchair, contrasting with the rigorous, formal structure of the shell, in five different colour standard combinations. Gender is unique chair, neither traditional nor modern, but that draws its strength from this original mix.
